Location and cartography

Ha Long Bay is a part of the province of Quang Ninh and is located in the northeast corner of Vietnam. It is in the coastal area stretching from 106° 56' to 107° 37' East longitude and 20° 43' to 21° 09' North latitude. Ha Long Bay spreads from Yen Hung district in the West and Northwest, over the large urban areas of Ha Long City, Cam Pha Town, the Van Don district in the Southwest, to Cat Ba Island in the Hai Phong province in the South.

The area that was recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage area covers an area of 434 sq. km and includes 775 islands, 411 of which are named.

The region is characterised by a rapid economic development and ecological fragility. The challenge is to find the right long-term balance between socio-economic development and ecological sustainability.

Buffer zone of the protected area

To the West, Northwest, North and Northeast, the buffer zone around the world heritage area follows the coastline along the national highway no. 18 A, from the B12 fuel warehouse (Cai Dam) to kilometer no. 11 (Quang Hanh commune, Cam Pha Town). The buffer zone is 5-7 km, on a moving scale of 1-2 km. The surrounding area is either sea or mainland, and includes the coastline boundary adjacent to Cat Ba National Park. On the map below, the protected area is delimited by the blue line and the buffer zone is delimited by the purple line. In the South, the two areas coincide because there is no buffer zone in the direction of the sea.
