Corona 05/28/1965.

QuickBird 04/21/2002.

Satellite imageries are useful to assess the growth of the city of Marrakesh. The comparison of the Corona space photograph acquired in 1965 and the QuickBird image (new type of very high resolution image, 1 m) acquired in 2002 highlights the change occurred during the last 37 years.

The “medina” is delimited by ramparts (purple line), while new buildings are show in yellow outside of the “medina” and in red inside.

New constructions are mainly limited inside of the medina, Marrakesh mainly growths to the North. A lot of new luxurious hotels are located just outside of the buffer zone at the south west of the medina along the road to the “Menara”.

The growth of the city occurred mainly at the expense of gardens and orchards.
