During the Second World War, the Historic Centre of Warsaw was completely destroyed. Aerial photogtraphs taken in 1935, 1947 and 1990 can be used to compare de different situations. In 1935 (left), the Stare Miasto comprising the Market place with old houses (2 below) and the Royal Castle (1 below) are architectural heritage included in the ramparts of the city. All these vestiges were destroyed in 1944 as it is well visible on the photograph taken in 1947 (centre). The Royal Castle, in the upper left is disappeared. Finally, on the photograph from 1990 (right), the Stare Miasto is rebuild similar to the situation before the war.

These aerial photographs were very useful for the reconstruction of the Stare Miasto, as well as all the ground photographs of the buildings. Using all these materials it was possible to rebuild exactly the same.
